Studio Service

overview:

A clean and organized studio space facilitates the art-making process and keeps tools and equipment functioning properly. This is a significant concern in a printmaking studio because there are many messy, wet, and difficult to clean materials. In some instances even a small amount of chemical or material contamination can cause considerable problems ruining tools, equipment, and artwork. Therefore, each student in the class is responsible for the cleanup of their own materials, organizing tools in designated areas, and cleaning the space as a whole.

Additionally, one student will be scheduled to oversee the cleanup each day and check on the supply of tools and materials in the classroom. The studio service component is a critical part of the course grade, but the individual in this role is NOT responsible for doing the cleanup work for the entire class; each student is expected to clean their own mess each day. The individual in the studio service role will straighten up, help with some of the issues that naturally happen in the room (especially with regard to the sink), check supplies, and report issues to me in person or via email.

duties:

  1. You must be present on your scheduled day up until the end of class. The end of class is the most critical time because most cleaning occurs just before the end of class. It would be wonderful to stay even a couple of minutes after class, but this is NOT required as many students need to leave promptly for work or classes.

  2. If you need to change your date, please find a replacement to switch with you and then notify me of the change. If you are absent on your date it will be switched for you.

3.    Organize the space and clean as needed. See CLEANING below.

4.    Report on supplies that are out or running low. After you check supplies, give me a list of items that need to be restocked in person (verbally or written) or by email at jlarva@depaul.edu. You should also let me know if all items are in good supply and you have nothing else to report. See SUPPLIES below.

5.    Report issues to me. Other issues may arise, so please convey them to me person (verbally or written) or by email at jlarva@depaul.edu.

  1. If your role coincides with a class critique: in addition to your standard duties you may be asked to help move artworks or other critique-related tasks as needed.

cleaning:

1.    Items often accumulate in and around the sink. Put all clean items back in their designated areas (they may still be wet and that is OK). Clean items if time allows. Look for: Ink Knives, Squeegees, Screens, Scrub Brushes, Sponges

2.    Clean up and wipe off the sink counter. Be especially careful to remove standing water.

3.    Check that the washout booth is off (properly) and the water is off. It should also be unplugged. (Washout booth instructions linked here.)

4.    Check for standing water on the floor around the sink and on the inside of the washout booth. Notify me or the art office front desk ASAP if there is standing water.

5.    General organization and cleaning of the room, tools, materials, and equipment.
