CAPSTONE PATHWAY
Professional Practice
Typically, students take The Art School
professional practice course (ART 394) before capstone, but this is not always
the case. In the professional practice course students go over artist
statements, bios, documenting artwork for portfolios (etc.) and think about
possible capstone project proposals. Here is a sample of what is covered in the 394 course. Here is the ART 394 course description:
ART 394 | PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE IN THE STUDIO
An intensive art seminar introducing students to the
professional, business, and legal skills needed to manage a career in Studio
Art, Graphic Art or Photography and Media Art. Senior standing and status as an Art, Media and Design major or
minor are prerequisites for this class. Juniors may attend with instructor's
consent.
Choosing a Capstone Experience
Students take either the ART 392 (DPAM) or ART
393 course as their capstone experience.
The ART 392 course develops a body of exhibition-quality work and culminates
with a public exhibition in the DePaul Art Museum. It is only offered in the spring and students may only take the course once. This
course is intensive and requires active, self-directed work towards the goals
of the course. Here is the ART 392 description:
ART 392 | SENIOR STUDIO SEMINAR (DPAM)
An intensive capstone seminar of contemporary art theory
and studio practice in the student's area of concentration. Required for
graduation in Studio Art and in Media Arts. Senior status and major in the Art School.
The ART 393 course develops a strong body of
work and typically has a smaller-scale display of work in the Art School
building. The class is equally intensive, but does not
have the added pressure of preparing for a DPAM exhibition opening. It is
typically offered more than once in an academic year, and some students choose
to take it in addition to the other capstone course. Here is the ART 393
description:
ART 393 | SENIOR PROJECT STUDIO
In this capstone course students work on advanced
self-directed project(s) with an emphasis on developing a cohesive research
methodology, artist statement and refined finalized works ready for
presentation. Juniors may attend with instructor's consent. ART 101 or ART 224 or GD 151 or knowledge of
Photoshop and/or experience with a digital SLR camera is highly recommended. Senior standing and status as an Art, Media and Design major or
Art minor are prerequisites for this course.
