syllabus — ART 395 — Special Topics: Screen Printing

Artwork Creation / Project Assignment

description

This course provides a high degree of autonomy to allow you to create portfolio quality work that is technically advanced and conceptually rigorous.

My expectations for our working process (in addition to those outlined in the syllabus) are:

1.    You will seek meaningful concepts to drive your work and you will support and develop these concepts through researching the areas and topics involved. I will provide additional resources or materials to assist your research and will be available for in-depth discussion in and/or outside of class.

2.    You will improve your skills and techniques in the screen printing medium (stencil creation to printing) through practice and/or experimentation. You will choose the printing processes and production appropriate to the content of your work and I will assist you in developing your proficiency (mixed media work is allowed).

3.    You will make sure I am informed of your progress in your work on a regular basis, and also discuss the materials/supplies you will need in advance.

4.    My role is to challenge you and facilitate your creation of strong work. Your role is to actively communicate with me and challenge yourself.

The default framework for me to grade your work in this class is for you to develop 3 significant artwork collections addressing topics of your choice; this wording is intentionally loose to accommodate a variety of production results. Assignment submission will coincide with the 3 class critiques so your work will be part of the critique discussion. You will also post the results of your work on D2L.

You may propose a different framework than the one outlined above for my approval. If you wish to propose a different framework, please outline your personalized vision for the course and email it to jlarva@depaul.edu within 2 weeks of your first class period.

assignment submission format:

1.    Be prepared to display your print work during the class critiques – submit in class on due date (if absent you must submit a written component via D2L; discuss the format with me)

2.    Documentation of your work and digital submission (see details below) – submit via D2L within 1 week from crit completion

Photograph / document your work from class critique and submit the JPGs (or HEICs) in the appropriate D2L folder within 1 week of the end of class critique. You will have a brief amount of time to photograph your work during class critique or you may photograph it before/after critique. It is not my expectation that you edit the images or clean them up, but as long as your work was in critique, you may submit appropriately edited images if you choose.

NOTE: Please submit a minimum of 6 images as JPG (or HEIC) files to receive full credit for your work. Do not submit in a different file format without discussing with me (for example GIF or MOV or MP4 files may be appropriate for certain works).
NOTE: Items loaded after the 1 week timeframe will be considered late and will receive reduced points.
NOTE: Assignment credit may not be granted unless minimum D2L submission requirements are met.

Please submit a minimum of 6 JPG/HEIC images in the following format or in a comparable and comprehensive format that fits your work:

1+ photo(s) of a detail of a single work

1+ photo(s) or some configuration of photos showing ALL your work for critique – this part of the documentation doesn’t need to be formal and can be prints spread on the wall or floor, etc.

4+ photos documenting the work in a way that you see fit.

[ This is a minimum of 6 photos total ]
