syllabus — ART 395 — Alternative Printmaking

In-progress “Snapshots”

overview:
Many printmaking studios are community-centered spaces that have a collaborative spirit and mission. This fosters a close-knit environment where printmakers can help each other by offering feedback, resource information, ideas, troubleshooting, and an extra hand. The tight drying space of many print studios means that everyone in the studio can see their peers’ prints as they develop a single work or body of work.

It is impossible to recreate this experience remotely, but to keep us all on the same page and sharing ideas, each of you will post an in-progress image (or images) each week in our class discussion boards, starting by week 3 (earlier is great too). Each person in the class should take a look at the image “snapshots” and respond to multiple “snapshots” over the course of the quarter. This way we can share in the group development over the quarter.

printmaking community responses:

• Take a look at classmate’s snapshots and posts in the discussion boards regularly.

· Respond to multiple snapshots and/or posts over the course of the quarter.

· We know there are issues with equity in terms of time and resources this quarter, so if you have more time and ability, your help getting involved and supporting the community would be greatly appreciated.

· Please note that the way this component is written is purposefully loose because I want to be flexible for those who need it.

image “snapshot” posting:

• Think of the “snapshot” as a moment of time in your progress rather than strictly a photo. You may post a photo of a sketch, an experiment, a print, a group of prints, the set-up of your process, or other related items that show your progress on your print work. You may also share a digital or scanned file, or an image and explanation of a concept you are developing.
• Post at least one “snapshot” a week, even critique weeks.
• You can “count” a week in any way you see fit (Tuesday to Tuesday, Sunday to Sunday, roughly every 7 days) as long as you’ve posted at least one “snapshot” in each weekly discussion starting with the week 3 discussion board.
• Images should be legible but do not need to be high quality and carefully cropped like works submitted for critique.
• Please note that it is OK if some weeks have more meaningful posts than others.
