WEEK 1

Read the
syllabus in class (hand out printed version)
Lecture and discussion: Introduction to the class and course material,
Review course sections (392/393), Review previous student work, Discuss hybrid format and open studio classroom, Overview of Process Journal (D2L Quiz Entries), Review syllabus and course expectations, Review contract (syllabus last page), Begin working on Artist Presentations.

Read the entire syllabus and this schedule then sign the contract; photograph the signed contract page and upload it on D2L.
homework2: Bring in supplies, tools and materials to begin working on your art thesis project
homework3: Prepare a 5 minute Artist Presentation for the next class that covers your artistic interests, examples of your work, and what you intend to do for your final Art Thesis Project (Presentation can be any format including PowerPoint, Keynote, PDF etc.; Upload to D2L)

Collect supplies, materials, and tools necessary to begin working on your Art Thesis Project. In this early ideation phase you should be testing and experimenting with materials and processes, sketching, brainstorming, researching, making digital mock ups, producing test photos, building prototypes etc.

homework3: WATCH: videos from any of the following websites to get insight into artist’s practices:
Halfcut Tea (series playlist) or https://www.pbs.org/show/art-21/ (write down a minimum of 1 point of inspiration or something you learned from one of the videos to be included in your Process Journal 1 entry)

Individually or in self-organized groups visit the SAIC BFA Exhibition in person. Take notes and photographs for reference (at least 3 photos are needed for your process journal entry). Pay attention to how the work is finalized for public reception, artist statements and title cards. For your
Process Journal 2 homework choose a minimum of 3 works that relate to your project in some way or are inspiring to you (consider media, technique, content, scale etc.); take photos of the works.

T     4/22..... Project Process GRADE: You will receive a process grade which is ⅓ of your final Art Thesis Project grade. Upload a photo of your work-in-progress to D2L so you can receive a grade. The Professor will meet with each student to assess their work in class. Organize where you are at in the process so you can clearly communicate where your project is going and what your plans are for midterm critique. You will be asked for the overall size, media and any special needs (pedestals, electricity, etc.).

homework1: Prepare Art Thesis Project for Mid-Term Critique next class, homework2: Prepare Process Journal 3 entry summary of critical art reviews and 1-3 aspects of your project that you would like feedback on during midterm critique

 

R      5/1..... MID TERM CRITIQUES in person with guest critics, Meet in Room 211 or designated space, critiques are 10 mins per student, Take notes in your Process Journal (or consider having a partner also take notes for you during your critique).


GRADE: You will receive a midterm grade which is ⅓ of your final
Art Thesis Project grade, Upload a photo of your work-in-progress to D2L so you can receive a grade


*It is highly recommended that you arrange to photograph your work in the critique space before or after critique as a warm up for professionally photographing your artwork. Consider assisting each other with lighting and DSLR camera setup. You will have time to shoot your work again before the final
postcard is due but it is strongly suggested you go through the process now to determine the best way to represent your artwork through a photograph.

Review and discuss expectations and requirements for Individual Critiques (Peer, Professor) and Final Exam Reflection Paper, small group discussion of individual critique process and suggestions, In-class send out formal invitations to peer(s) and professor(s) to set up time slots to discuss your work at DPAM on Tuesday and Wednesday of finals week (see below).

NOTE 3: Please remove or throw out
